BOOK REVIEW:Christmas Shopaholic (Shopaholic #9) by Sophie Kinsella

Plot : 5/5
Characters : 5/5
Writing : 4/5

Genre : Contemporary, Romance, Humor, Comedy

Age Recommended: 13 yrs and up

“Whatever the Grinch can steal, it’s not Christmas.”

Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) adores Christmas. It’s always the same – Mum and Dad hosting, carols playing, Mum pretending she made the Christmas pudding, and the next-door neighbors coming round for sherry in their terrible festive jumpers.

And now it’s even easier with online bargain-shopping sites – if you spend enough you even get free delivery. Sorted!

But this year looks set to be different. Unable to resist the draw of craft beer and smashed avocado, Becky’s parents are moving to ultra-trendy Shoreditch and have asked Becky if she’ll host Christmas this year. What could possibly go wrong?

With sister Jess demanding a vegan turkey, husband Luke determined that he just wants aftershave again, and little Minnie insisting on a very specific picnic hamper – surely Becky can manage all this, as well as the surprise appearance of an old boyfriend and his pushy new girlfriend, whose motives are far from clear . . .

Will chaos ensue, or will Becky manage to bring comfort and joy to Christmas?

In the ninth installment of the witty, laugh aloud Shopaholic series, my favorite character of all time- Becky is all geared up to host Christmas at her place! Nothing can go wrong in just hosting a festival right? But since we are talking about Becky here, there can be no promises that the preparations will be smooth right? As, we all know what all Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) is capable of. Be it hosting two weddings on the same day or be it traveling all the way to Las Vegas to look for her Dad.

Therefore, this adventure of hers was not any different! In fact, it was just way more entertaining and amusing. Like, when it comes to the plot, I cannot even be any critical as the minute I started this book, I was lost in the story so so sooo much that made me realize that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the plot. The pacing, the events and sub-plots altogether were great! Like always, the plot was amazing. Every plot of the Shopaholic series never disappoints me. It’s always so so sooo intriguing and gripping! I love it!

When it comes to the characters, I cannot even describe how well-developed and well portrayed they are. Becky, to begin with, is not just an ordinary woman in her late twenties trying to sort out the mess in her life. In fact, she is one of the strongest female character. She is caring, lovable and does not give up easily. Luke Brandon, Becky’s husband is a perfect man in very realistic terms. The love and consideration he has for every venture taken up by Becky and then even always standing next to her no matter what happens, leaves me in ‘awe’. Suze, Becky’s best friend is such a fun and amusing character. It’s always so great to read about her as she is often the sane one when it comes to Becky’s and hers duo. Suze always balances Becky’s craziness. Becky’s sister, Jess, in this book too is pretty environmentalist and her vegan self always ends up leaving Becky in great trouble and me in great laughter. Becky’s parents and her neighbors are perfect portrayal of parents and are always great fun to read about. Minnie, Becky’s and Luke’s daughter, is such a darling! She with her childish charms made the story more fun and amusing! Four new characters are introduced, which I do not wish to disclose. But they do play a major role in the story and two of them are not very nice in nature. While, the other two are great fun to read about!

“But the trouble with asking your subconscious what it wants is, it just laughs at you and says, ‘Work it out for yourself, moron.”

And, where do I even begin with Sophie Kinsella’s writing style? Kinsella is the QUEEN of witty and entertaining writing! Her writing style is so unique and fun that it always impresses me and leaves me in tears of laughter! She just gets better and better with every book! I love and adore how her writing always helps me to relate with the plot and characters. Further, I really love how, like always, she includes Becky’s emails and whatsapp exchanges in the story. How it began with letters in the first book and how it has reached to whatsapp in the ninth book just show as how far the series have come and how much it has achieved!

I would recommend this book to all the fans of fun and amusing romance! As, this book left me in a great ‘sprygee’ (according to Becky Bloomwood, which means a feeling of Euphoria)!
