Salmon Leaves Blog Banner (1

Plot : 4/5
Characters : 4/5
Writing : 4/5

Genre : Fiction, Young Adult, Literary Fiction

Age Recommended: 13 yrs and up

Eleven-year-old Raju wants to be a veterinary doctor, because in every cow he sees his Gaura maan, the cow his father Gopala has reared. When he sees any cow limping/bleeding, he feels that it is Gaura maan who is hurt, so he aspires to treat them all. Alas, the good work has to begin early and at home.

When Gaura maan begins to yield less milk, Gopala maltreats her – no feed, no vaccines. Gaura maan’s condition worsens when she feeds herself from stinking garbage bins. Raju discusses her plight with his friend Qasim and decides to transport her to a cowshed. But that’s easier said than done.

Gopala doesn’t allow this transport, Qasim can’t help him being Qasim, Gaura man refuses to leave him and he himself gets cold feet realising that separation from his Gaura maan is imminent!

The story is underpinned by Sandeep Kumar Rana’s preoccupation with the themes of empathy for all and interfaith.

As the synopsis suggests, the story revolves around Raju, an eleven-year-old boy and his love for their family cow ‘Gaura Maan’. He wishes to become a veterinary doctor when he grows up. His affection and concern towards animals especially their family cow enables and empowers him to stand up for the better treatment of cows and animals. The book further looks upon various empowering themes of empathy and interfaith harmony.

The plot of this book is something out of ordinary. I have never come across a plot like this. I mean, be it the pacing,  the structure or the occurrence of events, all of them were perfectly portrayed! I was intrigued from the beginning. The plot might not have ground shaking plot twists but it will surely keep you on your toes because the book deals with extremely important issues and enables the weal to voice their issues.

The characters were very diverse. They had a unique voice of their own. I really admire how well the characters throughout the book are presented in a well-thought manner. Be it the protagonist or the antagonist, the character development is brilliant. Similarly, I believe the characters and their way of actions and thoughts are quite well researched as well. This further makes the book more admiring and intriguing.

The writing style was really unique and gripping. The writer successfully conveyed his thoughts and feelings. The writing style helped the story to shine way more than it could have. I am now eagerly looking forward to read more of the author’s writing!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this gem of a book as it is a book that should be read by millions in order to bring a positive change in our world!!
